After my rendezvous with Nick, I left the farm feeling refreshed and a little giddy. He always knew how to make me feel better. And he was rightâMichel deserved justice, and I wanted to do what I could to get that for him.
Of course, I had no idea where to go now. It was clear that Henry was keeping things from me, and there was more than one shady character running around my town with more knowledge about Michelâs past than I had. But I didnât know how to find any of them, and I wasnât sure where to go next.
While Barbara potentially had a motive, she also seemed to have an alibi, and I found it hard to believe that this kind woman could hurt another person, even if she had gotten upset with me when Iâd said all those things in front of her family. Would she be willing to kill to protect her family? Maybeâ¦but why would they need protecting? And why give herself an alibi that could be so easily disputed?
I felt stuck with the investigation, and this was never a feeling I liked to have. I wanted to do what I could to find the truth about Michelâs killer and get Benjamin out of my town soon, but there was no clear path in front of me.
There was obviously more going on with Michel than heâd led us to believe, too. What had he been up to before opening his gallery in Los Angeles ten years ago? Why couldnât I find evidence of his activities online? His gallery seemed popular right from the start, showing up in old articles as an exemplar in the L.A. art scene.
So he mustâve made a name for himself before opening the gallery, yet I couldnât find any proof of that online. Where was he making his connections, if not on the internet? Heâd been in the business for a long time, even ten years ago, so he should have shown up somewhere on the internet. Maybe I just needed to keep digging.
Nadia had texted me while I was out at the farm with Nick, letting me know she was heading home early for the day with a headache. It was after seven at night, and we normally didnât have anyone staffing the front desk this late in the evening, so it was fine that sheâd left. She mustâve still been upset about Christos canceling on her.
The bistro would be closing soon as well, but I couldnât go home yet without picking up Lola first. She could be alone for a couple of hours at the inn, but she didnât spend the night there.
The lobby was quiet when I arrived, and Lola hurried out from behind the front desk at my arrival. I bent down to give her ears a ruffle and let her lick my cheek.
âItâs good to see you, too, girl,â I said, giving her back a scratch. âLetâs get you some dinner.â
I led her back to my office, pouring out a bowl of kibble I kept locked up for such occasions.
